A strong community spirit in Castlethorpe has so far meant that we have largely avoided the problems of anti-social behaviour. This has not happened by accident and relies on volunteer efforts to run community groups such as Castlethorpe Youth Club.
Now in its 17th year of operation, the Club has seen hundreds of young people develop with a sound grounding in social responsibility and community spirit, developing self-confidence and interpersonal skills. The Club continues to attract a good percentage of youngsters in the village every Wednesday night. Currently, 16-25 young people attend and these numbers are expected to increase.
Most important is the work the young people have undertaken over the years supporting the village such as the village fete, the duck race and the annual around the village Christmas carol singing with some impressive themed floats. Youth Club refurbished the school maypole, built the stage, provided the lighting effects and entered a group of young people to sing in the ‘Stars in their Eyes’ event for Friends of the School. They have helped at the Christmas lunch for elderly residents, repainted the railway bridge and, in 2008, street signs were cleaned throughout the village and leaflets distributed. Funds raised mostly go to the organising cause and not the Youth Club.
The Club received the highest OFSTED rating at its last inspection. Registered with Milton Keynes Council, we work closely with their Rural Youth team putting into practice both council and national youth initiatives. Over the years, villagers have looked back and appreciated this grounding and felt good about putting something back into their community.
The Club’s senior youth worker, Lawrence Chapman, has also been actively involved with a long running Home Office project advising on the ‘State of the Sector’ for the provision of voluntary youth services in the UK.
