Castlethorpe Youth Club

Have you every noticed how Castlethorpe has managed to largely avoid the problems of anti-social behaviour experienced in other local communities in and around MK?

This has not happened by accident and relies on volunteer efforts to run community groups such as Castlethorpe Youth Club (CYC) to ensure a strong community spirit continues to thrive in the village.

Now the longest running Youth Club in the MK area, CYC has seen hundreds of young people develop with a sound grounding in social responsibility and community spirit, developing self-confidence and interpersonal skills. The Club has always attracted a good percentage of youngsters in the village every Tuesday night. Up to 16-25 young people used to attend regularly but these numbers have started to decrease significantly over the last year or so.

Your village youth club is under threat if we cannot generate an increase in attendance from the young people in the village.

CYC is open to all young people from 11yrs (School Yr. 6) to 16yrs (School yr. 11) that live, or have strong ties with, Castlethorpe village. It runs weekly from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and is overseen by fully CRB accredited volunteers from the village. In the winter months a range of activities such as dodge ball, uni-hockey, music quizzes and cooking are organized in the village hall. In the summer months CYC take advantage of the fantastic facilities offered at Castlethorpe sports ground where we play tennis, softball, tag rugby and 5 a-side footie.

In addition to numerous weekly activities CYC has an Xbox (just in case our young people can’t live without technology for a night!), table football, pool/snooker tables and table tennis. We also run numerous trips; laser shooting, ten-pin bowling, swimming and have an annual cycle trip to the chippie in New Bradwell.

Every few years CYC runs an adventure weekend away, in the past travelling to Wales and the Cotswolds.

One important aspect of CYC, recognised and supported by the Parish Council and the community in general, has been the work that the young people have undertaken over the years supporting the Castlethorpe village.

CYC has helped with; the village fete, the duck race, the senior citizens Christmas lunch and the “Carols on the Green”. CYC has; refurbished the school maypole, helped Friends of Castlethorpe School put on fund raising events (who can forget ‘Stars in their Eyes’), repainted the railway bridge, cleaned the street signs throughout the village and distributed numerous leaflets/newsletters around village for local groups and charities.

The youth Club is also well known for it’s village performances such as “Mamma Mia” and “Viva Las Vegas”, where youth club members have entertained the village and been able to show off their singing and acting talents. Funds raised from these shows have been used to maintain the youth club facilities, arrange adventure weekends away and often gone to help other local causes and charities.

The Club received the highest OFSTED rating at its last inspection. Registered with Milton Keynes Council, we work closely with their Rural Youth development teams putting into practice both council and national youth initiatives. Over the years, villagers have looked back and appreciated this grounding and felt good about putting something back into their community.

The Club’s senior youth worker, Lawrence Chapman, recently received a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s New Years Honours list for his tireless work, not only with CYC since it’s inception in 1991, but with Youth services throughout the UK.

So if you are interested in coming along to the Youth Club to join in with the many activities on offer or you are interested in becoming a youth leader then please contact either Tony Rice tel: 510206 or Lawrence Chapman tel: 511390.
